“We are thrilled to report that our 2013 Walk, combined with the fifth annual Sully Shuffle, raised more than $50,000,” says Midwest Chapter President Maxine Dust. “The monies will be sent to APDA NY to help fund PD research, and support Information and Referral Centers which respond to the needs of people with Parkinson’s disease and their caregivers.”

This year’s Sully Shuffle raised $22,000 for the Midwest Chapter. Since its inception, it has brought in a total of $115,000. Named for retired Oak Lawn Community High School teacher/coach Skip Sullivan, who has battled PD for the past nine years, the event consistently draws about 175 runners and 200 walkers.

Recognizing that corporate sponsors are becoming increasingly difficult to come by, many individual donors are giving something extra to make up for the lost revenue. They also are putting a face on the disease and building awareness by walking in large groups and carrying signs and banners organized to pay tribute to and remember family members, friends, neighbors, and co-workers whose lives have been touched by PD.

One of the largest of these groups was comprised of current and former students, parents, and colleagues who walked to support Cheri Mahoney, a math teacher who is retiring after 21 years (the last 10 with PD) at Wheaton Christian Grammar School.

“The Parkinson’s community has taken to heart and personifies the philosophy, ‘If it’s to be, it’s up to me,’” Maxine says. “Thank you for all that you do to help people live well with Parkinson’s and to support research leading to the cure in our lifetimes.”

Participating in the Chapter’s Walk and the Sully Shuffle has become an annual tradition for families and friends.

“It’s great to see the community come together over this, building awareness and raising funds for PD research,” says Janet Meyers, Oak Lawn Community High School girls varsity basketball coach. “We couldn’t do it without this support.” Most notably, the Homestead Barr in Oak Lawn picks up the cost of all food and drink served at the post-party, making it a pure profit event.

“The outpouring of love and the generosity of the families and friends of people with Parkinson’s never ceases to amaze me,” says Walk co-chair Marsha Berlin.
